FALCON WILD by Terry Johnson is an adventure story about two teens and a raptor lost in the wilderness.

After a car accident, Karma and Cooper along with a falcon called Stark become lost in the Montana wilderness. While seeking help, the three learn to trust one another in order to survive the harsh, rugged conditions.

Librarians will find this novel popular with middle grade youth who enjoy friendship stories and outdoor adventures. In addition to the engaging story, readers will enjoy the abundance of information about falconry.

Book Review: The Wild Robot

THE WILD ROBOT by Peter Brown tells the thought-provoking story of a robot trying to survive and thrive in the wilderness.

When a ship carrying crates of robots sinks, one surviving robot is marooned on a remote island. Roz the robot soon finds a place in the unpredictable, outdoor world. Experiencing the seasons, making animal friends, and learning about nature, Roz gradually becomes part of the island’s animal community. When intruders come for Roz, the island creatures band together in support of their friend.

Young readers will be attracted to the many illustrations woven throughout the story. Peter Brown’s fascinating characters, fast-paced plot, and short, easy-to-read chapters will draw a large audience.

Librarians will find this book to be an engaging read-aloud option. The story’s unique premise combining the worlds of science fiction and the great outdoors makes for an unforgettable reading experience. Look for this title on many “best of 2016” lists.

HENRY DAVID THOREAU FOR KIDS: HIS LIFE AND IDEAS by Corinne Hosfeld Smith features the life and legacy of this beloved author, philosopher, and naturalist.

Aimed at the middle grades, this well-written biography tells the story of Henry David Thoreau. Focusing on his significant contributions and stressing his wilderness experience, the book is well-organized and focuses on topics of interest to youth.

Twenty-one engaging, hands-on activities including journal writing and gardening are woven throughout the book immersing readers in Thoreau’s world. The many visuals add interest to the story. The book also includes a timeline and list of resources.

Librarians will find this book to be an excellent addition to the library’s biography collection. The hands-on activities add to the appeal for reluctant readers.
