Book Review: In the Shadow of the Sun

IN THE SHADOW OF THE SUN by Anne Sibley O’Brien tells the heart-pounding story of two siblings trying to escape North Korea.
When her father is arrested, Mia and her brother Simon must find their to the border without being captured by North Korean soldiers. Carrying a smart phone with forbidden photographs, the siblings must find food and avoid detection as they make their way across North Korea to the Chinese border. This story of survival will keep even reluctant readers interested.
Librarians will find this compelling adventure story to be timely. Share it with students who enjoy travel, adventure, and mystery stories. Consider using it in a literature circle focusing on current events.

Book Review: This is Our Story

THIS IS OUR STORY by Ashley Elston is a gripping, young adult novel exploring friendship, grief, and a search for the truth behind a death.
After a teen is killed while hunting with friends, it’s unclear whether the death was an accident or murder. As an intern in the District Attorney’s Office digs deeper into the investigation, she uncovers evidence leading to the novel’s shocking conclusion. The author does an exceptional job building tension and using changing narrators to keep readers in the dark until the intriguing conclusion.
Librarians will find this powerful suspense to be popular with mystery fans. Addressing a variety of social issues, this work of contemporary, realistic fiction would be a good choice for a book club discussion.

Book Review: The Memory Book

THE MEMORY BOOK by Lara Avery is a heart-breaking young adult novel exploring the life of a teen with dementia.
Sam McCoy is an outstanding high school student who discovers she has a rare genetic disorder causing memory loss and rapidly declining health. Told through short electronic diary entries, Sam uses the journal as a way for her to record and remember important events in her short life.
Librarians will find this title popular among a large teen audience who enjoy realistic, contemporary stories about teens facing medical challenges. The journal format along with the romance elements add to the appeal.
