Synergy: Celebrating National Park


NATIONAL PARKS are lands set aside and protected by a national government for conservation and preservation. These lands contain distinctive natural and cultural resources such as a landforms, plants, and animals of particular value.


To understand a concept, it’s useful to read a cluster of books related to a theme. Explore these recently published books for young people:


NATIONAL MONUMENTS OF THE USA written by Cameron Walker and illustrated by Chris Turnham explores a wide range of iconic locations around the United States. Organized into eight chapters, a two-page spread identifies the monuments. Then, text blocks, infographics, and other visuals highlight key features of each location. ZION NATIONAL PARK by Greg Paprocki is a new book in the YOU ARE HERE! series. This picture book focuses on Zion’s unique geological landscape while sharing key facts about the park. I AM MADE OF MOUNTAINS written by Alexandra S.D. Hinrichs and illustrated by Vivian Mineker highlights the nature wonders of sixteen National Parks of the United States. Each two-page spread provides a stunning illustration reflecting a majestic location along with lyrical text and information about the particular park.

THE STORY OF CONSERVATION written by Catherine Barr and Steve Williams and illustrated by Amy Husband shares the science and history of conservation. Part of the STORY OF… series, readers learn about how the Earth’s natural resources can be cared and protected for future generations. Website Review: Scaredy Squirrel

SCAREDY SQUIRREL is a website featuring the Michèle Lemieux’s popular character.
The website features information about the books and the author. The video section contains book trailers and announcements. The “Around the World” area includes a world map and sightings of the character. Over a dozen print activities are provided along with suggestions for parents and teachers.
Librarians will find lots of ideas for featuring this character in library displays and programs. Use the “Around the World” section to jumpstart you own neighborhood photography project.

Website Review: Origami Yoda

The ORIGAMI YODA website provides resources associated with Tom Angleberger’s books and characters.
Set up as a blog, the website includes news and information about the author’s books and characters. In addition, users can explore information about the author and his books. Videos provide step-by-step origami instructions. Lots of examples of origami projects are available along with the option to submit original designs. In addition, a newsletter is available for educators.
Librarians will find the website provides lots of ideas and resources for book-related activities. Create a makerspace featuring the books along with materials for making origami projects. Include nonfiction books on paper folding along with related titles.

The JUNIE B JONES website features activities based on this popular book character.
Published by Penguin Random House, this interactive website features books, games, activities, characters, and information about the author and illustrator. Children can join a kid’s club. Sections for teachers and parents explore ways to ideas and suggestions to connecting children with books.
Librarians will find this website useful when introducing Junie B. Jones to children. Use the resources in a book display or establish your own book club.

Website Review: Kevin Henkes

KEVIN HENKES’ website contains information and resources about this popular children’s author and illustrator.
The website includes author and book information, along with resources for adults and short videos. Children will enjoy the questions and answers section along with the book pages featuring his popular characters including Chrysanthemum and Lilly.
Librarians will find dozens of downloadable teaching guides and student activities to accompany many of Henkes’ books. Of particular note are four videos featuring the author discussing his books.

The MO WILLEMS website celebrates the books of popular children’s author Mo Willems.
The author’s website is divided into sections that explore the author’s book characters, books, and writing activities.
Visit the Go Mo! to explore a website specifically designed for children that contains book information, fun games, an art gallery, videos, and an adult page. Featuring Willems’ beloved characters, the audio-enhanced games are age-appropriate and engaging for young children.
Visit the Pigeon Presents! website to enjoy information and activities focusing on Willems’ popular pigeon characters. Users can play games, read about books, learn about book characters, and explore teaching materials. This website also links to the new Elephant and Piggie Thank-o-Rama website that provides an introductory video, thank-you spinner, drawing video, and worksheets for printing.
